Lava Canyons, Mt. Saint Helens

LAVA CANYON
Lava Canyon is on the SE side of Mt. St. Helens. When the volcano erupted in 1980, large portions of the glaciers on the east side of the volcano melted and created a large "Lahar", or mud flow. The debris went into Pine Creek and Muddy River. Lava Canyon was flooded with raging water, boulders, and trees. The flood scoured the canyon floor revealing numerous ancient lava flows.

Today the Muddy River flows over ancient lava formations in a series of beautiful waterfalls. It's the kind of place that will take your breath away.

During this little hike and I mean little the pictures were taken when it was raining.  This was only a 1 mile hike round trip, when the weather gets better, we will finish the whole hike down to the canyon floor.
